Endovenous Ablation 101

Endovenous ablation is an innovative and effective treatment for varicose veins. If you are considering endovenous ablation, it helps to learn a bit about the procedure before you schedule an appointment.

What is Endovenous Ablation?

Varicose veins are typically caused by a condition known as venous reflux. This condition occurs when the valves in the veins stop working properly, causing blood to back up in the vein. Endovenous laser ablation is a procedure designed to eliminate varicose veins entirely. It works by heating the lining of the affected vein with laser energy, which causes the vein to collapse and fade from view.

What Will Happen During the Procedure?

During this procedure, a vascular surgeon will insert a small catheter directly into your vein. He or she will then use laser energy to treat the vein. These procedures are typically performed in a doctor’s office or clinic and take no more than 30 to 60 minutes to complete. After the procedure, you will experience little or no pain. If you have mild soreness or bruising, you can take over-the-counter pain medication for relief. In most cases, you will be able to return to your normal activities immediately after the procedure. Approximately one week after the procedure, you will have a follow-up appointment

Who Can Have Endovenous Ablation?

This procedure is appropriate for most varicose veins, including those that are causing pain and discomfort. Endovenous ablation will often be effective on varicose veins that are too large to be treated with sclerotherapy. However, this procedure should not be used to treat spider veins or varicose veins that are small enough to respond to less intensive treatments. Prior to scheduling this procedure, it’s best to consult a qualified physician to determine whether it is the best option for you.

What Are the Benefits of This Procedure?

Endovenous ablation offers many benefits including:
  • Relief from symptoms – After endovenous ablation, you will experience an almost immediate relief from the uncomfortable symptoms associated with your varicose veins.
  • Aesthetic improvement – Once your abnormal veins have faded from view, your skin will appear healthier. For many patients, this results in more confidence and higher self-esteem.
  • Minimally invasive – This procedure is minimally invasive and leaves no scar. It doesn’t require hospitalization or a lengthy recovery period.

Is it Effective?

Endovenous ablation produces excellent results for most patients. However, additional varicose veins may still appear in the future. In this case, further treatment may be necessary.
